Issue:
Customer complaining of Check Engine Light and P0411 stored in ECM.
Cause:
Fault within SAI system.
CONTENT
Action:
The attached document will assist dealer technicians in diagnosis of the SAI system. The attachment must be followed & completed to establish what cause the ECM to set the P0411 code. If all readings indicate no fault & the P0411 still logged in the ECM, contact the Jaguar HelpLine for assistance. Be sure to have all readings available when contacting the HelpLine, so they can record & document the readings. If a fault is found during the diagnosis, submit EPQR & document readings. Any parts that are replaced need to be held until your dealer is notified of shipping instructions.
For a complete description of the SAI system dealer technicians can log onto GTR and go to Engine Emission Control 303-08C Description & Operation (System Operation and Component Description).

DTC P0411 - Secondary Air Injection Incorrect Upstream Flow Detected - 2006-2010MY Jaguar AJV8 4.2L Engine
Secondary Air Injection (SAI) System Operation and Diagnosis
The SAI system only runs when the engine is fully cold (coolant temperature approximately equal to ambient temperature) & the ambient temperature is between 35F-104F. The ECM monitors the SAI pressure sensor, battery voltage & upstream oxygen sensors (UEGO) to confirm flow. Retailer Technicians are to begin diagnosis of DTC P0411 by verifying all electrical connections and pressure/vacuum lines within the SAI system. If any faults are found during the inspection of the system, correct the concern and retest the SAI to verify repair.
The following diagnostic procedure requires IDS to monitor both UEGOs with datalogger, DVOM to monitor the SAI pressure sensor (MAP sensor) & a vacuum gauge with line tee to monitor vacuum to diverter valve. If the procedure fails to determine the source of the fault & the ECM logs a P0411 during the diagnostic process, contact the Jaguar HelpLine for assistance.
Engineering is requesting that all parts replaced be returned for investigation via the Priority Return Request (PRR). To support this requirement Retailers must submit an EPQR for all P0411 diagnostic cases and to provide the following information; dealer contact (Part's manager), phone number, contact email address, RO number & part number.
As the MAP voltage and vacuum readings will need to be manually recorded at various intervals during SAI operation, complete familiarization with the entire test procedure is required prior to undertaking the diagnostics below. Failure to accurately follow the procedure will invalidate the test and require a lengthy cool-down period before another test can be performed. Once all the measurements have been recorded, recheck for any codes logged or pending. If the P0411 isn't stored, then the concern was NOT verified and no repairs should be performed. Only when the concern is verified and the test results are reviewed should a repair be completed. If the test results don't indicate any faults and the ECM still logged a P0411, contact the Jaguar HelpLine for additional assistance & submit an EPQR. Ensure all test results are available when contacting the HelpLine. Once the HelpLine has reviewed the test results, a repair recommendation will be provided.
SAI diagnosis
Measure and record the battery voltage with the ignition off using a DVOM. Start a new session with IDS, record then clear all fault codes. After clearing codes, launch data logger & select the following PIDs to be viewed;
- Both UEGO (Upstream) sensors- current. When monitoring O2 sensors, select ±0.5 milliamps scale. Select O2 "wide range oxygen sensor".
- ECT & IAT temperature sensors
- Battery voltage
Tee into the vacuum line to the diverter valve to monitor vacuum while the SAI is operating. Using appropriate tools for back-probing sealed connectors, attach a DVOM to monitor the output voltage from the SAI MAP sensor (Pin 2-Blue & Green wire for XF).
- Using a DVOM, measure Battery voltage with Key off and no loads (at battery terminals) ___________________
- Battery voltage with Key On Engine Off (KOEO) & no loads (at battery terminals) ___________________
- ECT ____________ & IAT ______________. Monitor sensors to ensure the engine is fully cold. Each should read approximately equal.
- SAI MAP sensor voltage with KOEO __________________.
- If the engine is fully cold ECT & IAT are reading equal, start engine.
- SAI MAP voltage 5 seconds after the pump turned on __________________
- Press the record icon in the top right corner of the IDS datalogger screen to record O2 sensor activity.
- Vacuum to the diverter valve _________________.
- SAI MAP voltage 15 seconds of SAI operation ________________________.
- SAI MAP voltage when valve closed & pump running ______________. This reading will only last about 5 seconds before it returns to the KOEO voltage.
Review the O2 recording with IDS and document the highest O2 readings during the SAI operation.
- Highest Bank 1 Upstream O2 readings during the SAI operation _________________________
- Highest Bank 2 Upstream O2 readings during the SAI operation _________________________
Check for fault codes in the ECM and see if P0411 has been logged. If the code is logged, then review readings and determine the fault. The information below will assist the technician with determining the possible causes. If nothing is obvious, then contact the Jaguar HelpLine for assistance.
Possible causes
Only check the following if the P0411 was logged or pending in the ECM after performing diagnostic procedure.
No change in MAP reading or O2sensors, but there was vacuum to diverter valve.
Damage relay or circuit to SAI pump
Defective pump
Defective MAP sensor (no voltage change, but O2s responded). Ensure the hose to sensor isn't disconnected or restricted before replacing sensor.
MAP readings were correct, but O2sensors didn't respond. No vacuum to diverter valve while monitoring.
Vacuum line to diverter valve restricted or disconnected
Defective vacuum diverter valve solenoid
Open, shorted, or high resistance within circuit for diverter solenoid
MAP sensor voltage changed and vacuum was at the diverter valve, but O 2 sensors didn't respond.
Defective diverter valve
Restricted lines within the SAI system
