Removal & Installation: Removal
- Select "N" gear position.
- Open the engine compartment and fit paint work protection sheets.
- Remove the battery cover and disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the air intake tube, MAFM and air cleaner cover assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts which secure the air intake tube to the throttle body. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body.
- Release the 5 clips which secure the air cleaner cover. Disconnect the airflow meter connector.
- Disconnect the breather pipe from the "A" bank valve cover. Remove and discard the "O" ring from the breather pipe. Remove the air intake tube/airflow meter/air cleaner cover assembly. Remove and discard the air intake tube-to-throttle body rubber seal.
- Cut and remove the strap which secures the vacuum pipe to the intake manifold elbow.
- Install engine lifting bracket 303-536 at the rear RH.
- Reposition the coolant header tank for access.
- Remove the securing bolt.
- Reposition the tank.
- Install engine lifting bracket 303-536 at the rear LH.
- Support the engine using 303-021.
- Adjust and locate the stands in the LH and RH fender channels and tighten the beam fixings.
- Engage the support hooks in the lifting brackets.
- Tighten the support hook adjusters and take the weight of the engine.
- Raise the vehicle for access.
- Remove the LH downpipe catalytic converter.
- Remove the downpipe catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifolds.
- Loosen front and intermediate muffler clamps (both left and right sides) to allow front muffler to slide forward and disconnect from the intermediate muffler. Slide front muffler down to disconnect from down pipe catalytic converters.
- Remove the RH downpipe catalytic converter.
- Remove the downpipe catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifolds.
See Fig 9.
- Remove catalytic converter mounting bracket bolts and remove catalytic converters. Remove the 2 bolts from the catalytic converter mounting bracket and remove the bracket. Repeat for the other catalytic converter.
- Drain the transmission fluid. See TRANSMISSION FLUID DRAINING .
- Locate a transmission jack, Epco V-100 or similar, under the transmission unit.
- Adjust the angle of the jack to suit the transmission.
- Secure the side clamps.
- Pass the safety chain over the transmission unit and secure.
- Remove the engine rear mounting bracket.
- Remove the engine rear mounting to bracket bolt.
- Remove the mounting bracket to body bolts.
- Detach the driveshaft from the transmission drive flange.
- If the transmission is to be refitted, mark the position of the coupling to drive flange.
- Remove the transmission drive flange to flexible coupling three fixings.
CAUTION: Under no circumstances remove the driveshaft to flexible coupling fixings. - Lower the transmission unit by carefully releasing the engine support beam and by lowering the transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission cross shaft nut and remove the selector lever from the cross shaft. Remove the 2 selector cable bracket bolts and remove selector cable from the transmission.
- Release the transmission harness connector lock lever and disconnect the transmission harness connector.
- Detach the rotary switch.
- Remove the switch fixings.
- Displace the switch harness from the clips.
- Disconnect the fluid cooler pipes.
- Unscrew the cooler pipe tube nuts, one at each side of the transmission casing.
- Discard the "O" rings.
- Plug the pipes and transmission.
- Remove the three bolts which secure the torque converter to the drive plate.
- Remove the access cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft and hold to prevent movement, and remove the bolts.
- Remove the bolts which secure the engine harness connector mounting bracket and move the bracket aside for access.
- On the RH side, clear the cooler pipe for access.
- Remove the four upper transmission to engine bolts.
- Remove the ground lead bolt.
- Remove the upper cooler pipe clip to transmission case bolt.
- Remove the six remaining transmission case to cylinder block bolts.
- Remove the transmission/converter assembly from the vehicle.
- Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission, ensuring that the torque converter spigot disengages cleanly from the engine.
- If appropriate, fit retaining straps to the converter/transmission assembly.
