Adaptive Vehicle Speed Control: Operation
On vehicles for certain markets, an adaptive speed control system is installed as an option. In addition to the normal vehicle speed control functions, this system enables a preset distance to be maintained behind a moving vehicle immediately ahead, without driver intervention.
As on the standard speed control system, adaptive speed control is activated by an ON/OFF master switch in the 'J' gate surround and an integral red light illuminates when the system is activated. In addition to the four steering wheel mounted speed control buttons in the standard speed control system, two buttons provide for increasing (<--->) or reducing (< - >) the time gap to be maintained from the vehicle ahead. On adoption of the 'follow mode', a symbol illuminates in the instrument cluster to indicate the system is in operation, and the relative time gap between vehicles is displayed in the message center for four seconds. The vehicle then maintains the pre-selected time gap between vehicles until the vehicle ahead either accelerates to a speed above that pre-set, moves out of lane or out of view, or slows until automatic 'low speed switch-off' occurs.
