Differentials & Drive Axles: Description: S-Type
Differential has a steel case and rear cover without a drain plug. Differential uses a sealed for life lubricant. Differential assembly uses hypoid gearset mounted in tapered roller bearings. Bearing straps retain a 2-point differential assembly. The central pinion is on the centerline of the vehicle. Pinion and output oil seals, the companion flange and nut, and the output bearing are the only serviceable components.
The crossbeam forms the mounting points for the 3 differential mounting bushings. All 3 bushings are conventional rubber that control the driveline and isolate differential noise and vibration. It is not necessary to disturb the subframe mounts when servicing differential bushings. The front bushing consists of 2 parts. The 2 rear bushings are color coded to denote a left side or right side bushing.
