Removal & Installation (XJS)

  1. Release fuel system pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Disconnect battery cables. Remove cover and battery. Remove spare tire. Using an approved container, drain fuel from fuel tank. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel tank. Lower vehicle. Remove trunk carpet and trim panels as necessary. On convertible models, remove metal panel to access fuel tank. On all models, remove spare tire securing stud.
  3. Remove fuel tank retaining straps (coupe). Note location of wiring harnesses and connectors for installation reference, and disconnect wiring harness connectors as necessary. Release clip securing purge and overflow pipes. Note position of pipes for installation reference, and remove pipes from evaporative flange.
    WARNING: Before removing trunk lid strut lower mounting bolts, install hood prop to support trunk lid.
  4. Install hood prop to support trunk lid. Remove lower mounting bolts from both trunk lid struts. Remove both body reinforcement panels. See Fig 1 .
  5. Open fuel filler flap. Remove fuel filler neck retaining screws. Remove filler neck retaining plate, seal and filler neck. Remove filler neck hose from fuel tank. Disconnect drain tubes.
  6. Disconnect all necessary hoses and wiring connectors. Remove fuel tank. To install, reverse removal procedure.
