Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IATS)

On 4.0L, the IATS is located in inlet air elbow, between throttle body and mass airflow sensor. On 6.0L, IATS is located in left air inlet elbow. On all models, sensor is a Negative Thermal Coefficient (NTC) thermistor with a shrouded bead for fast response to changing air temperatures. The IATS provides an air temperature signal to the PCM. Its main purpose is to control ignition retard functions during hot/high ambient operation. The retard function allows ignition to be calibrated for best performance and economy, with detonation (engine knock).
