Alternator Cable Continuity

  1. Disconnect leads from alternator terminals, turn ignition on, connect voltmeter to a good ground and to each lead in turn. See Fig 1. Battery voltage should be present at each lead.
  2. If a low or zero reading is obtained on main B+ lead, check starter solenoid connections, terminal posts and battery connections.
  3. If low or zero reading is obtained on D+ lead, check warning light, wiring from ignition switch to warning light and wiring from warning light to alternator. If no fault is found, turn ignition off and reconnect leads to alternator.
