Transaxle Disassembly: Disassembly
- Remove bolts, nuts and washers retaining converter housing to transmission and remove housing. If not previously done, remove dipstick and breather from case and drain transmission fluid.
- Place transmission on bench with oil pan facing upward and place selector lever in park position. Remove retaining bolts and withdraw speedometer driven gear assembly from extension housing, then remove and discard sealing "O" ring.
- Remove bolt or nut securing flange to output shaft and withdraw flange suing puller if necessary. Remove bolts and nuts securing extension housing to case, withdraw housing and discard gasket.
- If necessary, remove and discard oil seal from extension housing. Slide speedometer drive gear off output shaft. Remove oil pan-to-case bolts and washers, remove oil pan and discard gasket.
- Note installed positions of oil tubes for reassembly reference. Using screwdriver, pry out 5 oil tubes connected to valve body. DO NOT
attempt to remove oil tube partially covered by valve body. See Fig 1
.
- Disconnect throttle cable from throttle cam. Remove valve body-to-case bolts and withdraw valve body (take care not to lose manual valve). Remove 2 remaining oil tubes from valve body area of case. Remove bolts retaining oil pump tube plate and withdraw plate and tubes. See Fig 2
.
- Scratch alignment marks on oil pump housing and transmission case. Remove pump-to-case bolts and withdraw oil pump. Remove and discard pump-to-case gasket and pump-to-front clutch thrust washer.
- At rear end of transmission, remove plug and spring washer retaining governor to output shaft. Note installed position of governor, and remove from shaft. Using screwdriver, carefully pry oil tubes from case and governor support.
- Loosen both band adjusting screw lock nuts. Remove adjusting screws from case then withdraw both band struts. Withdraw front clutch and input shaft assembly from case. Remove bronze and steel thrust washers, then withdraw rear clutch assembly.
- Compress ends of front band together and remove from case. Withdraw forward sun gear shaft from case, along with small needle thrust bearing from front end of shaft and large needle thrust bearing and race from rear end of shaft.
- Remove bolts securing center support in case. Push forward on output shaft to break support loose, then withdraw center support and planetary assembly from case. Remove planetary-to-output shaft needle thrust bearing, then separate support and planetary. See Fig 3
.
- Move output shaft back into original position. Compress ends of rear band together, and remove band from case. Remove output shaft assembly from case along with output shaft-to-case thrust washer.
- Remove bolts securing front servo cover to case. Remove cover, and withdraw servo piston, rod and spring. Scribe alignment marks on rear servo cover and transmission case. Remove bolts attaching servo cover. Remove rear servo cover, piston, rod and spring from case.
- Remove retaining bolts from plate covering parking pawl, withdraw pivot pin, and remove rear servo operating lever. See Fig 4
