Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II OBD-II system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, read and record FAILURE RECORDS data. Clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS data as noted on scan tool. If scan tool displays DTC P1546 RAN AND PASSED, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If scan tool does not display DTC P1546 RAN AND PASSED, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove A/C compressor clutch relay from underhood fuse/relay block. Turn ignition on. Use DVOM to check for voltage at both ignition feed terminals of A/C compressor clutch relay plug-in. If voltage readings are around 12 volts at both terminals, go to step  5. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  4. Check for faulty circuit between A/C compressor clutch relay plug-in and A/C fuse (10-amp) located in underhood fuse/relay block. Repair as necessary. Retest system.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. Check for faulty A/C compressor relay control circuit between PCM and A/C compressor clutch relay. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  6. Reinstall relay. Using a fused jumper wire, ground A/C compressor relay control circuit at PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. If A/C compressor turns on, go to step  9. If A/C compressor does not turn on, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Check for faulty circuit between A/C compressor clutch and relay. Repair as necessary. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  8. Replace A/C compressor clutch relay. Retest system.
  9. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
