Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Review and record scan tool FAILURE RECORDS data, then clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FAILURE RECORDS conditions that were recorded. Monitor specified DTC information for DTC P0480. If scan tool indicates DTC P0480 RAN AND PASSED, check for poor connections, open circuit or shorted condition. If DTC P0480 is set, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove low fan relay from underhood fuse/relay block. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for voltage at power feed terminal from ELEC. FAN (30-amp) fuse. If reading is about 12 volts, go to step  6. If reading is not about 12 volts, go to next step.
  4. Using DVOM, check for voltage at power feed terminal of low speed relay connector from ENGINE FAN (15-amp) fuse. If reading is approximately 12 volts, go to step  6. If reading is not about 12 volts, go to next step.
  5. Check low fan relay circuit and fuse for an open or shorted condition. Repair as necessary. Retest system.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using a DVOM, check low fan relay control circuit between PCM and underhood electrical center for an open or shorted condition. Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
  7. Install low fan relay. Using a fused jumper wire, ground low fan relay control circuit at appropriate PCM connector terminal. Turn ignition on, engine off. If fan runs at low speed, go to next step. If fan does not run at low speed, replace low fan relay.
  8. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
