Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Run engine at slightly more than 10 percent throttle angle. If MIL illuminates, go to step  4. If MIL does not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Review FREEZE FRAME data and note readings. Operate vehicle within conditions noted for setting DTC. If MIL illuminates, go to next step. If MIL does not illuminate, go to step  13.
  4. Listen to engine while increasing and decreasing engine speed. If an abnormal audible noise is present, go to next step. If an abnormal audible engine noise is not present, go to step  6.
  5. Repair cause of abnormal engine noise. Go to step  13.
  6. While observing scan tool, slowly increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. If KS count increases with engine RPM, go to next step. If KS count does not increase with engine RPM, go to step  9.
  7. Turn ignition off. Inspect PCM and KS connectors for damaged terminals. If connectors are okay, go to next step. If either connector needed repair, go to step  13.
  8. Replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Go to step  13.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using a DVOM connected to ground, measure resistance of KS through knock sensor circuit. If reading is 90-110 k/ohms, go back to step  7. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  10. Check knock sensor electrical connector for a poor connection and repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step. If repair was necessary, go to step  13.
  11. Check KS signal circuit for an open or shorted condition. Repair as necessary and go to step  13. If an open or shorted condition does not exist in KS circuit, go to next step.
  12. Replace knock sensor. Go to next step.
  13. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Start engine and idle to normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within conditions for setting DTC. If scan tool indicates this diagnostic has RAN AND PASSED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate this diagnostic has RAN AND PASSED, go back to step  2.
  14. Check for any additional DTCs. If additional DTCs are set, see appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TEST for DTC set. If no other DTCs exist, system is okay.
