Charging System Test

  1. Disconnect generator wiring harness connector from generator. Turn ignition on. Connect voltmeter between ground and harness connector terminal "L", and terminal "IG" (if used). See Fig 1 . If reading is zero volts, locate and repair open between terminal measured and ignition switch.
  2. Connect generator harness connector. Start engine and increase engine speed to 1500-2000 RPM, with accessories off. Using a voltmeter, measure across battery posts. If reading is greater than 16 volts, replace or repair generator. If reading is less than 16 volts, go to next step.
WARNING: To avoid a battery explosion, ensure carbon pile rheostat is OFF before connecting it to battery.
  3. Connect an ammeter to generator output terminal. Start engine and increase engine speed to 1500-2000 RPM, with accessories on. Load battery with carbon pile rheostat to obtain maximum amperes output, maintaining battery voltage at or above 13.0 volts. Refer to Fig 1 .
  4. If output measured is within 15 amps of rated generator output, generator is okay. If output measured is not within 15 amps of rated output, repair or replace generator. See GENERATOR SPECIFICATIONS  table.
