Wiper/Washer Systems: Operation
With ignition on, voltage is supplied from fuse labeled FRT WIPER to front wiper switch, wiper motor and wiper relay. FRT WIPER fuse is located in fuse box behind left side of instrument panel. Wiper relay is located in fuse/relay box in engine compartment, on passenger side.
With wiper switch in LO or HI position, battery voltage is supplied to appropriate windings of wiper motor to obtain correct speed. While wiper motor is in park/run mode, switching off wipers directs battery voltage to low speed windings.
When internal switch of wiper motor reaches park position, battery voltage is removed from circuit, and wipers remain in off or park position.
With wiper switch in INT (intermittent) position (if equipped), battery voltage is supplied to intermittent relay. Relay will then be momentarily energized every 3-4 seconds (intermittent wipers) or within a range of about 2-20 seconds (variable wipers), sending battery voltage to low speed windings of wiper motor. The park/run mode will then move wipers from park to run and back to park position. Wipers will make a single sweep every 3-4 seconds (intermittent wipers) or within a range of about 2-20 seconds (variable wipers).
When MIST (washer switch) is depressed, battery voltage is supplied to washer motor and intermittent wiper relay, sending voltage to low speed windings of wiper motor. Wipers will operate until switch is released.
When rear wiper/washer switch is in ON position, battery voltage is supplied from fuse labeled RR WIPER/WASHER through rear wiper relay to rear wiper motor, which then moves an internal switch from park to run position. When wiper/washer switch is turned to OFF position, wiper motor receives battery voltage through wiper/washer switch from off contacts of internal switch. When wiper reaches park position, contacts of internal switch move to park position, and wiper motor stops. When wash function of rear wiper/washer switch is activated, voltage is supplied to washer motor.
When headlight wiper/washer switch is activated with ignition on, voltage is supplied to wiper motors, wiper timer and washer motor from fuse labeled H-LAMP WIPER. Fuse is located in fuse box behind left side of instrument panel. For headlight wiper operation, turn ignition on. Depress headlight wiper/washer switch. Wipers will move 5 strokes, with washer solution applied between each of first 4 strokes, regardless of time switch is depressed.
