Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Isuzu Rodeo and 1996 Honda Passport. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The EBCM is located under passenger seat. During braking, EBCM monitors rear wheel lock-up based on input signals from speed sensor and brakelight switch. To prevent rear wheel lock-up, EBCM controls hydraulic brake pressure to rear wheels by controlling ALV.

The EBCM performs a self-check operation on anti-lock brake system every time ignition is turned on. The self-check operation activates isolation valve and dump valve (part of ALV assembly) to check for defective operation. If system is operating correctly, ANTI-LOCK indicator light on instrument panel will illuminate for 2 seconds, then turn off. If system is defective, ANTI-LOCK indicator light will remain on and a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored in EBCM memory. DTC can be obtained to determine system failure. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.

NOTE: If a DTC is present, BRAKE warning light will also illuminate. In case EBCM cannot disable anti-lock brake system, EBCM will cause an internal fuse to blow, disabling ABS operation.
