Road Test
- Before performing road test, check fluid level, fluid condition and shift linkage adjustment. Check for stored diagnostic trouble codes. See HYDRA-MATIC 4L30-E DIAGNOSIS article.
- If stored diagnostic trouble code exists, clear diagnostic trouble codes from TCM memory. See HYDRA-MATIC 4L30-E DIAGNOSIS article.
- Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Road test vehicle and check for abnormal noise and clutch slippage and shift firmness. Specified clutch and brake are applied in designated gear. See CLUTCH & BAND APPLICATION table under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Ensure upshift and downshift speeds are correct in relation to throttle opening and position of power or winter mode switches mounted on center console, near shift lever. See appropriate table in SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) operation is correct to gear application in relation to throttle opening with shift lever in "D" position. See TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SPECIFICATIONS table.
- During road test if CHECK TRANS light on instrument panel starts flashing, a diagnostic trouble code is stored in the TCM memory. Check stored diagnostic trouble code and repair as necessary.
- During road test, if problem exists, but CHECK TRANS light on instrument panel did not flash, shut engine off. Disconnect electrical connectors at TCM, mounted below driver's side of instrument panel. See Figure .
- Repeat road test, while manually shifting the transmission. With shift lever in "L" position, transmission should remain in 1st gear. With shift lever in "2" position, transmission should remain in 3rd gear. With shift lever in "3" or "D" position, transmission should remain in 4th gear. Shut engine off. Reinstall electrical connectors on TCM.
- If problem still exists, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem does not exist with electrical connectors disconnected at TCM, check wiring connections and TCM ground circuits.
NOTE:
On 1994 models, if road test is performed with engine coolant temperature less than 158°F (70°C), shift speeds will be delayed during light throttle application and occur at a slightly higher speed.
NOTE:
On 1994 models, if TECH 1 scan tool is connected to TCM/EC data link connector, maximum line pressure will be obtained, resulting in harsh shifts.
NOTE:
Engine coolant temperature must be greater than 158°F (70°C) for TCC operation. The TCC operates in 2nd gear kickdown when engine coolant temperature is greater than 158°F (70°C). The TCC operates in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear when transmission fluid temperature is greater than 284°F (140°C).
