Retrieving Trouble Codes

  1. Count number of flashes from "CHECK ENGINE" light. A trouble code will be identified by a .4 second flash on and off for the first number. A 1.2 second pause will occur followed by the second number. See Fig 2 .
  2. If system is operating properly (with no trouble codes), a trouble code No. 12 should exist with ignition on and engine off. This indicates the diagnostic system is capable of storing trouble codes. Start engine and note codes displayed.
NOTE: Engine must be running to check trouble codes. Trouble codes No. 13, 31, 44 and 45 require engine operation at part throttle for up to 5 minutes after engine reaches normal operating temperature to set trouble code. Trouble code No. 15 requires that engine operates at least 5 minutes before trouble code will be displayed.
  3. Each individual trouble code will be repeated 3 times and then display the next trouble code. See Fig 2 . Once all trouble codes are displayed, trouble codes will be repeated. After codes are retrieved, remove jumper wire from diagnostic connector to exit diagnostic mode.
