CODE 44 (O2 Sensor Lean Condition)

  1. Connect dwell meter (4-cyl. scale). Warm engine until upper radiator hose is warm. Choke the engine at part throttle and note dwell. If the dwell increases, go to step 3). If dwell does not change, disconnect O2 sensor.
  2. Connect 1.5-volt dry cell battery positive side to O2 sensor wire to ECM. Connect negative side of dry cell battery to ground. If dwell increases, replace O2 sensor. If dwell is less than 10 degrees, Violet wire to ECM is grounded or ECM is faulty.
  3. Check for intake air leak or exhaust leak ahead of O2 sensor. If no leaks, repair carburetor.
