Hydraulic System Testing
- With engine not running, disconnect pressure hose from pump. Install Gauge (J-29877 ) and shut-off valve in hose using extra hose. Gauge capacity should exceed 1250 psi (88 kg/cm2 ). Pressure gauge must be connected between valve and pump.
- Bleed system by holding gauge beneath fluid reservoir with shut-off valve open. Check fluid level in reservoir with engine idling. Refill if necessary. Turn steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times until thermometer indicates that hydraulic fluid has reached a temperature of 122°-140° F (50°-60° C).
- When checked with engine running at 1500 RPM and valve closed, fluid pressure must be 1085-1210 psi (77-85 kg/cm2
). If fluid is not at specified pressure, oil pump is malfunctioning.NOTE: DO NOT leave shut-off valve fully closed more than 15 seconds or pump may be damaged internally.
- If step 3) indicates that pump pressure is to specifications, open valve fully to test steering gear assembly. With engine running, turn steering gear lock-to-lock and note oil pressure. If steering gear assembly is okay, pressure will be 1085-1210 psi (77-85 kg/cm2 ). If pressure is not to specification, steering gear may require repair.
NOTE:
Avoid holding steering wheel at lock position more than 5 seconds or fluid temperature will increase sharply.
