CONSULT-II CONVERTER SOFTWARE UPDATE

SERVICE INFORMATION

A new software update (version 17  ) for the CONSULT-II CONVERTER is now available.

To install this update, you'll use CONSULT-II and the ECU Reprogramming Card-8MB Orange/White color card (P/N J-44200-ECM).

The ECU Reprogramming Card must  be the newest version-AER05A (see ITB04-003 ).

The CONSULT-II CONVERTER is powered by the vehicle battery. When performing CONVERTER software update, the DLC must be connected to the vehicle.

Follow the Service Procedure in this bulletin to update your CONSULT-II CONVERTER software.

ACTIONS:

Step A. Make sure the ECU Reprogramming card is version AER05A (refer to STEP A: CONFIRM THE ECU REPROGRAMMING CARD IS VERSION AER05A  under SERVICE PROCEDURE).

Step B. Check the current  CONVERTER software version to see if it needs to be updated (refer to STEP B: CHECK THE CURRENT CONVERTER SOFTWARE VERSION TO SEE IF IT NEEDS TO BE UPDATED  under SERVICE PROCEDURE).

Step C. Preparation Steps before software update (refer to STEP C: PREPARATION STEPS BEFORE UPDATING THE CONSULT-II CONVERTER SOFTWARE  under SERVICE PROCEDURE).

Step D. Update the CONSULT-II CONVERTER software (refer to STEP D: UPDATE THE CONSULT-II CONVERTER SOFTWARE  under SERVICE PROCEDURE).

IMPORTANT: The purpose of "ACTIONS" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this update.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

STEP A: CONFIRM THE ECU REPROGRAMMING CARD IS VERSION AER05A

  1. Insert the 8MB Orange/White ECU Reprogramming card  into the upper slot of CONSULT-II.
  2. Power ON CONSULT-II.
  3. Verify the version on the Start menu displays AER05A or later  (see Fig 1 ).
    • If the version is  AER05A or later, power OFF CONSULT-II and continue to the next step.
    • If the version is not  AER05A or later, you must update the ECU Reprogramming Card software (see ITB04-003 ).

STEP B: CHECK THE CURRENT CONVERTER SOFTWARE VERSION TO SEE IF IT NEEDS TO BE UPDATED

  1. Connect CONSULT-II with the CONVERTER cable set  to a newer Infiniti vehicle (i.e. 2005 or 2004).

  2. Turn the ignition switch ON (do not start the engine  ).
    • CONSULT-II will automatically power ON and illuminate the power indicator lamp (LED) on the CONVERTER.
  3. Select INITIATE ECU REPROGRAM >> CONSULT-II CONVERTER >> NEXT >> CHECK VERSION 
    • If the version is lower than "0017" (i.e. 0013, 0014, etc.), you must update the software. Continue with this procedure.
    • If the version is "0017" or greater, STOP - software update is not  needed.
  4. Press BACK  three times to return to the start menu.

STEP C: PREPARATION STEPS BEFORE UPDATING THE CONSULT-II CONVERTER SOFTWARE

  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle's battery.
    • Set the charger to a low charge rate (trickle charge).
  2. Turn Off All Electrical Loads (I.E. A/C, Headlights, Rear Defogger, Etc.).
    CAUTION: For Steps 3, 4 And 5, Do Not Connect The Consult-II A/C Power Supply (See Fig 3 ).

  3. Press Sub Mode  (See Fig 4 ), Then:

  4. From The Listed Items, Find And Select

    Battery Charge 

  5. Check The Consult-II's "Charger Input" Reading (See Fig 5 ).
    NOTE:
    • "Battery Voltage" is the voltage level of CONSULT-II's battery.
    • "Charger Input" is the voltage level of the vehicle's battery. (it must be above 12 Volts.)

    CAUTION: If the "Charger Input" is below 12 volts one or more of the following may be the cause:
    • The battery charger you hooked up is not charging the battery (poor connection or it's not working).
    • The DLC-II does not have a good connection to the vehicle (it's not straight in the vehicle's connector "port").
    • The DLC-II cable may have a malfunction (damaged wires or pins).
    • The CONSULT-II Converter (J44200-50 / black box) is not working correctly.
  6. Press BACK  two times.

STEP D: UPDATE THE CONSULT-II CONVERTER SOFTWARE

CAUTION: Before proceeding, make sure all mobile/cell phones in the service area are turned OFF.
  1. Select INITIATE ECU REPROGRAM >> CONSULT-II CONVERTER >> NEXT >> CONVERTER UPDATE VERSION 0017. >> START 
    • The update will take approximately 2 minutes to complete (a progress bar will be displayed on the screen).
    NOTE: If CONSULT-II displays an error and does not complete the software update:
    • Turn the ignition key OFF, power OFF CONSULT-II, then
    • Retry the update, starting with STEP A  .
  2. When complete, press END. 
    • CONSULT-II will automatically print out a summary of the update (see Fig 6 ).
    • Confirm the new version is "0017"

  3. The update is now complete. Turn the ignition OFF. Disconnect CONSULT-II and cable set from the vehicle.
