SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Determine if premium fuel is being used in the vehicle:
    • If premium fuel is being used, proceed to step 2.
    • If premium fuel is not being used:
      1. Tell the customer that premium fuel should be used for improved performance.
      2. Ask the customer to use-up their regular fuel, then fill the tank with premium.
      3. Request the customer drive the vehicle with premium fuel for a few days and return to the dealer if they feel there is still a slight lack of power on acceleration.
  2. Determine the vehicle's ECM Part Number. The ECM P/N is found by using CONSULT-II. Go to ECM P/N Selection.
  3. Compare the vehicle's ECM P/N to those shown under Current ECM P/N in I35 ECM P/N INFORMATION  and I35 (EARLY PRODUCTION) ECM P/N INFORMATION  below:
    I35 ECM P/N INFORMATION

I35 Current ECM P/N ECM ID Code (2)
    2002 with TCS (1) 23710-5Y724 030105
    2002 with TCS (2) 23710-6Y321, 6Y320 030105
    (1) TCS = Traction Control System
    (2) IMPORTANT: You must use the ECM I.D. Code. The I.D. code is required to obtain the correct ECM data for resolving the symptom covered by this bulletin.
I35 (EARLY PRODUCTION) ECM P/N INFORMATION

I35 (early production) Current ECM P/N ECM ID Code (2)
    2002 with TCS (1) 23710-5Y723, 5Y722, 5Y721, 5Y720 030105
    (1) TCS = Traction Control System
    (2) Requires replacement of Mass Airflow Sensor.
    1. Check I35 ECM P/N INFORMATION : If the ECM P/N in the vehicle matches one of those listed under "Current ECM P/N":
      • Perform ECM Reprogramming, step 4.
    2. Check I35 (EARLY PRODUCTION) ECM P/N INFORMATION : If the ECM P/N in the vehicle matches one of those listed under "Current ECM P/N":
      • Replace the Mass Airflow Sensor (see Parts Information). Refer to the applicable Service Manual (ESM), section EC, for replacement procedures.
      • Perform ECM Reprogramming, step 4.
    3. If the ECM P/N in the vehicle does not match one of those listed under "Current ECM P/N" in I35 ECM P/N INFORMATION  or I35 (EARLY PRODUCTION) ECM P/N INFORMATION  :
      • This bulletin does not apply. Use the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) to further diagnose and repair the incident.
  4. Reprogram the ECM. Refer to SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY .
    IMPORTANT:
    • This I.D. code process is different from the "typical" ECM Reprogramming procedures now in use.
    • Do NOT use "Attachment A" (from other bulletins) for the reprogramming required in this bulletin.

OBTAINING SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING DATA USING AN ID CODE

  • The following steps are taken from Special ECM Reprogramming Procedure For ECM I.D. Entry.
  • Use these steps if you are familiar with this Special ECM reprogramming procedure.
  • If you are unfamiliar with this Special ECM Reprogramming Procedure, refer to SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY .
  1. Click on the Keypad button (see Fig 10).
  2. Use the digit keys on the Keypad (see Fig 1 below) to enter the correct ECM ID Code from I35 ECM P/N INFORMATION  or I35 (EARLY PRODUCTION) ECM P/N INFORMATION  .

SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY

Perform the Download ECM Reprogramming data into CONSULT-II from ASIST procedure below.

CAUTION: The ECM can be permanently damaged if the Reprogramming procedure is not followed exactly. Do not attempt Reprogramming if the vehicle or the CONSULT-II batteries are low. Do not disconnect or disturb the CONSULT-II while ECM Reprogramming is in progress. If the ECM is damaged, it must be replaced, and will not be covered by the vehicle warranty.
IMPORTANT:
  • This is a special ECM reprogram and the following procedure is used FOR THIS INCIDENT ONLY!
  • Step 7 of Download ECM Reprogramming data into CONSULT-II from ASIST has been changed. An ECM ID CODE must be entered to get the Reprogramming data from ASIST. This is different from the typical ECM Reprogramming procedures now in use. The ECM ID code is listed in the right hand column of ECM Information table in the Bulletin.
  • For limited application special customer concern incidents like this, the ECM ID CODE will be used. The general procedure for most other incidents will remain as usual: Enter Model Year and Model to look up ECM data in ASIST.

  1. Download ECM Reprogramming data into CONSULT-II from ASIST Procedure
Remove the Diagnostics Card (blue) and install the ECM Reprogramming Software Card (orange) into slot A of CONSULT-II (see Fig 3).
