Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch System Test: QX4

  1. If using CONSULT-II, go to next step. If not using CONSULT-II, go to step  3.
  2. Start engine. Using CONSULT-II, check PW/ST SIGNAL in DATA MONITOR mode. When steering wheel is in Neutral position, tester should indicate OFF. When steering wheel is being turned, tester should indicate ON. If results are as specified, test is complete. If results are not as specified, go to step  4.
  3. Start engine. Using voltmeter, check voltage between engine ground and ECM terminal No. 47. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. When steering wheel is in neutral position, voltmeter should indicate about 5 volts. When steering wheel is turned to full position in either direction, voltmeter should indicate zero volts. If results are as specified, test is complete. If results are not as specified , go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. Check harness continuity between engine ground and PSP switch terminal No. 2. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If problem is found, repair open or short circuit(s) as necessary. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 47 and PSP switch terminal No. 1. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If no problem is found, go to step  7. If problem is found, go to next step.
  6. Check the following:
    • Harness connectors F235 and M32.
    • Harness connectors E1 and M1.
    • Harness connectors E48 and E102.
    • Harness for open or short between ECM and power steering pressure switch.

Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.

  7. Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. Start engine. Connect ohmmeter leads to PSP switch terminals No. 1 and 2. Check for PSP switch continuity. When steering wheel is not being turned, continuity should not exist. When steering wheel is being turned, continuity should exist. If results are as specified, go to next step. If results are not as specified, replace PSP switch.
  8. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
