Ignition Switch (Start Signal): Quest

  1. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 20 (Blue/Black wire) by backprobing. See Figure and Figure . With ignition switch in START position, voltage should be 9-12 volts. With ignition switch in any other position, voltage should be about zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step  5. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position, then to START position. If starter motor operates, go to next step. If starter motor does not operate, repair starting system. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  3. Check fuse No. 12 (7.5-amp) located in fuse block. Fuse block is located under left side of instrument panel. Replace fuse, if necessary. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Remove fuse No. 12. Check continuity of Blue/Black wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 20 and fuse No. 12 cavity in fuse block (fused circuit side). Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair circuit as necessary. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  5. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
