Preliminary Checks
NOTE:
Before starting ABS system checks, road test vehicle to confirm customer complaint.
- Check brake fluid level. If brake fluid is low, check for brake fluid leak or worn brake pads. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Ensure brake fluid level is correct. Add fluid if necessary. Inspect mechanical condition of conventional brake system, including brake booster and component adjustments. See DISC & DRUM article. Repair or adjust brake system as necessary. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. If ABS warning light turns on, go to next step. If ABS warning light does not turn on, go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS .
- Start engine. If ABS warning light turns off after engine starts, go to next step. If ABS warning light remains on, go to RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES .
- Drive vehicle at 20 MPH or more for at least one minute. If ABS warning light turns on, go to RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . If ABS warning light remains off, system is okay.
