Preliminary Checks

NOTE: Before starting ABS system checks, road test vehicle to confirm customer complaint.
  1. Check brake fluid level. If brake fluid is low, check for brake fluid leak or worn brake pads. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. Ensure brake fluid level is correct. Add fluid if necessary. Inspect mechanical condition of conventional brake system, including brake booster and component adjustments. See DISC & DRUM article. Repair or adjust brake system as necessary. Go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. If ABS warning light turns on, go to next step. If ABS warning light does not turn on, go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  .
  4. Start engine. If ABS warning light turns off after engine starts, go to next step. If ABS warning light remains on, go to RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .
  5. Drive vehicle at 20 MPH or more for at least one minute. If ABS warning light turns on, go to RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  . If ABS warning light remains off, system is okay.
