Description & Operation

The Anti-Lock Brake/Traction Control System (ABS/TCS) has 2 functions. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) consists of electronic and hydraulic components which controls braking force, preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking conditions. Traction Control System (TCS) controls engine torque through throttle control, fuel-cut control systems and A/T shifting to prevent drive wheels from spinning or slipping. This prevents rear end of vehicle from skidding to either side which improves vehicle acceleration and overall vehicle stability.

Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module receives inputs from ABS/TCS control unit to control the throttle actuator. To prevent wheel slip during acceleration, TAC module will regulate the opening of the throttle using the throttle actuator.

A slight vibration and noise may be noticed during ABS operation. These conditions are normal and indicate anti-lock brake system is functioning properly. If a malfunction occurs in system, anti-lock feature will not function but conventional brakes will continue to operate normally. Components include ABS/TCS control unit, TAC module, throttle actuator assembly, 2 front wheel sensors and 2 rear wheel sensors. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see DISC article.
