DTC P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Check Speedometer Operation
- Raise and support drive wheels. Start engine. With transaxle in gear, check speedometer operation. If speedometer exceeds 6 MPH, go to next step. If speedometer does not exceed 6 MPH, repair speedometer as necessary.
- Check Input Signal Circuit
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector and combination meter harness connector. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 29 and combination meter terminal 18 (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. If continuity is present, testing is complete. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary and perform FINAL CHECK.
- Check Component
- Remove VSS from transaxle. Set voltmeter on AC scale. Connect voltmeter to VSS connector terminals. Quickly turn VSS pinion gear. Voltage generated should be about 0.5 volt. If voltage is not correct, replace vehicle speed sensor. If voltage is correct, disconnect system harness connectors and inspect for damage or corrosion. Repair as necessary and retest.
