Piston & Rod Assembly
- When removing piston from connecting rod, remove snap ring from piston. Heat piston to 140-158°F (60-70°C) in oil. Remove piston pin. Separate piston from connecting rod.
- Ensure piston pin diameter and hole in piston are within specification. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- Ensure connecting rod piston pin bushing bore diameter, bend, twist and center-to-center length are within specification. See CONNECTING RODS under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- Replace bushing in connecting rod if bore diameter is not within specification. Ensure bushing oil hole aligns with connecting rod oil hole. Ream bushing to obtain correct piston pin clearance.
- To reassemble, install piston with front mark on piston top toward front and oil hole in connecting rod properly aligned. See Fig 1 .
- Install NEW snap ring in piston with chamfered side of snap ring facing outward (away from piston pin). Heat piston to 140-158°F (60-70°C) in oil. Install piston pin. Install remaining snap ring with chamfered side of snap ring facing outward (away from piston pin).
NOTE:
Three different standard piston sizes and cylinder bore diameters are used. Piston and cylinder bore sizes are identified by grade number ("1", "2" or "3") stamped on top of cylinder block. See Figure
.
