Mechanical Inspection: Compression
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Hyundai XG350, 2002 Hyundai Sonata, 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2002 Hyundai Elantra, and 2002 Hyundai Accent. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
DO NOT use ignition switch during compression tests on fuel injected vehicles. Use a remote starter to crank engine. Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard or contaminate engine oiling system.
NOTE:
Before checking engine compression pressure ensure engine oil level is correct. Ensure starter motor and battery are operating properly.
Check engine mechanical condition using a compression gauge, vacuum gauge or engine analyzer. See engine analyzer manual for specific instructions. Start engine and allow to operate until coolant temperature is 176-205°F (80-96°C). Check engine compression with engine at specified cranking speed, all spark plugs removed and throttle wide open. For engine compression specifications, see COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS table.
