Test Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent to OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Turn ignition on. Monitor for DTCs. Verify DTCs P0111, P0112 or P0113 are set and go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Ensure engine is at shop ambient temperature (overnight cool down recommended). Measure and record shop air temperature. Turn ignition on. Using Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent, monitor IAT sensor temperature reading. Sensor temperature reading should be approximately to shop ambient air temperature. If sensor temperature reading is as specified, problem is intermittent, check IAT sensor and ECM for proper harness connection and go to step  7. If sensor temperature reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT sensor harness connector (5-pin connector on 1.5L) or (4-pin connector on 1.6L). See Figure and Figure . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and appropriate IAT sensor harness connector terminal. See INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CONNECTOR TERMINALS  table. Voltage should be approximately 5 volts. If voltage is as specified (is DTC P0112), go to next step. If voltage is not as specified (no voltage present, is DTC P0113), go to step  6.
INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CONNECTOR TERMINALS

Application Wire Color IAT Sensor Harness Connector Terminal No.
    1.5L Orange 5
    1.6L Orange 3
  4. Turn ignition off. Leave IAT sensor harness connector disconnected. Disconnect ECM 81-pin harness connector. See Figure. Measure resistance between ECM connector terminal No. 42 and IAT sensor connector terminal No. 5 (Orange wire on 1.5L) or No. 3 (Orange wire on 1.6L). Resistance should be one ohm or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Orange wire) between IAT sensor and ECM. After repair go to step  7.
  5. Verify than IAT sensor and ECM connectors are secure. If connectors are okay, replace IAT sensor with known-good component. If after sensor replacement problem persists, replace ECM and go to step  7.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAT sensor harness connector (5-pin connector on 1.5L) or (4-pin connector on 1.6L). See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance between ECM connector terminal No. 33 and IAT sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Orange wire on 1.5L) or (Blue/Orange wire on 1.6L). Resistance should be one ohm or less. If resistance is as specified, go to step  4. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Red/Orange wire on 1.5L) or (in Blue/Orange on 1.6L) between IAT sensor and ECM. After repair go to next step.
  7. Return vehicle to original condition. Clear codes using Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent. Verify repairs by driving vehicle and monitoring for pending codes. If DTC is set during test drive, follow appropriate DTC test procedure.
