Test Procedures
- Test drive vehicle and check if speedometer operates properly. If speedometer operates properly, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate properly, repair speedometer cable and/or cable drive gear. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS operation.
- Turn ignition on and observe instrument cluster indicators. If all instrument cluster indicators operate properly, go to next step. If instrument cluster indicators do not operate properly, repair Black wire between ground and instrument cluster 10-pin connector M71-3 terminal No. 2. See Figure . When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster 14-pin connector M71-3. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector M71-3 terminals No. 6 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 8 (White/Black wire). See Figure . Resistance should be more than 50 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair short to ground or short to another circuit in Blue/Black wire or White/Black wire between instrument cluster and ECM connector terminal No. 59. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system VSS operation.
- Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin connector M71-1. Connect a jumper wire between ground and ECM connector terminal No. 59 (Blue/Black wire). See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector M71-3 terminals No. 6 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 8 (White/Black wire). If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in appropriate wire between instrument cluster and ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify VSS system operation.
- Rotate speedometer cable and check for toggling continuity between instrument cluster connector M71-3 terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and instrument cluster connector M71-3 terminals No. 6 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 8 (White/Black wire). Continuity should toggle on and off 4 times for every speedometer cable rotation. If continuity does not toggle as specified, replace VSS. If continuity toggles as specified, verify ECM connector terminals are clean and tight. If ECM connector is okay, replace VSS with a known-good component. Clear DTC and verify system operation. If problem persists, replace ECM. When repairs are completed, clear DTC and verify system operation.
