DESCRIPTION

An updated Transmission Control Module (TCM) has been designed to improve the shift quality on some 1995 and ALL 1996 model Hyundais (see parts table below for application). The new logic is designed to reduce the engagement time during the Park / Reverse or Park / Drive (also Neutral / Reverse, Neutral / Drive) commands.

SERVICE INFORMATION

The following procedures should be followed prior to replacing the TCM:

Using a digital stopwatch, measure the engagement time from P / D and P / R (N / D and N / R). If the delay time EXCEEDS 1.5 seconds, proceed to next step.

EXCESSIVE ENGAGEMENT TIME FOR P / D OR N / D

Confirm that idle speed is set to specification: For 1995 - 1996 Sonata, refer to the Fuel System Section of the appropriate shop manual. For 1995 - 1996 Accent or 1996 Elantra, refer to the Motronic EFI Training manual.
Check ATM Oil Temperature Sensor (refer to TSB #95-40-009 ).
If the above procedures did not decrease the delay to within the 1.5 second standard, and the vehicle was produced PRIOR to the Effective Production Date (see parts table below), replace the TCM. If the vehicle was produced AFTER the Effective Production Date, replace the transaxle.

EXCESSIVE ENGAGEMENT TIME FOR P / R OR N / R

If the vehicle was produced PRIOR to the Effective Production Date, replace the TCM. If the vehicle was produced AFTER the Effective Production Date, replace the transaxle.
