Alternator Output Test

NOTE: Check alternator wire harness connections and drive belt tension. Battery must be fully charged before beginning test. Wait at least 30 seconds after starting engine before measuring voltage.
  1. Using a voltmeter, ensure battery voltage is present at terminal "B" of alternator. If battery voltage is not present, circuit to alternator terminal "B" is open and should be repaired.
  2. If battery voltage is present at terminal "B", connect an inductive ammeter around alternator terminal "B" wire. Start engine, quickly turn lights and heater blower motor on high and run engine to 2500 RPM. Observe ammeter reading. See ALTERNATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS  table. If alternator output is not within specifications, remove and bench test alternator.
