Steering Column: Assembly
- Install bearing into upper end of steering column. Grease upper bearing. Insert steering shaft into steering column. Secure with snap ring.
- Grease inside of lower bearing. Slide bearing over shaft and into column. Install steering lock assembly. Refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
- When assembling dust cover and boot to lower shaft assembly the open end of the dust cover must face the passenger compartment side of the shaft assembly. The boot must be over the lower universal joint.
- The gearbox side universal joint measures 1.5" (37 mm) from the center of the cross shaft to center of attaching bolt hole. See Fig 1. The passenger compartment side universal joint measures 1.75" (44 mm) from the center of the cross shaft to the center of the attaching bolt hole.

- Apply grease to both halves of lower bearing. Install bearing into dust cover. Position lower universal joint on gearbox shaft. Finger tighten dust cover attaching bolts to floorboard.
- Tighten universal joint to gearbox shaft retaining bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 N.m). Using marks made during removal, position upper steering shaft into upper universal joint. Tighten retaining bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 N.m).
- Place steering column assembly and retaining brackets into position under dashboard. Tighten column retaining bolts to 84 INCH lbs. Loosen dust cover retaining bolts.
- Move dust cover as necessary so that there will be no clearance between joint and dust cover sliding surface. Tighten dust cover retaining bolts. Install combination switch, steering wheel and associated wiring harness. Refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
