Test Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Perform battery inspection/test. If battery passes test, go to next step.
- Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the scan tool power up? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP
under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES in COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & ELECTRICAL.NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
- Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the Class 2 Power Mode parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If yes, go to next step. If no, see POWER MODE MISMATCH under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES in COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & ELECTRICAL.
- Attempt to establish communication with the following:
- Instrument panel cluster (IPC)
- Dash integration module (DIM)
- Powertrain control module (PCM)
- Select the IPC, DIM and the PCM display DTC function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SYMPTOMS - ENGINE ELECTRICAL .
- Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with "U"? If yes, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES in COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & ELECTRICAL. If no, go to next step.
- Does the scan tool display DTC B1000, B1004, B1007, or B1009? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES in COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & ELECTRICAL. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS in CHARGING SYSTEM in ELECTRICAL.
