The gear ratio can be switched by controlling the planetary gear mechanism with engaging/releasing the clutches and the brakes. Engagement/release of the clutches and the brakes are hydraulically controlled by the clutch pressure control solenoid valve. The transmission control module (TCM) calculates the gear ratio from the input speed and the output speed of the transmission. If the actual gear ratio is out of specified range when the 10th gear is commanded, the TCM detects a malfunction of the hydraulic supply system, the clutch, or the brake and stores a DTC.
