Ring Gear Visual Inspection

Test Procedure

  Torque converter cover: removed

Procedure

  Check damaged or worn ring gear of the torque converter.

Normal Conditions

  Not damaged or worn.

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the torque converter.

Drive Gear Visual Inspection

Test Procedure

Preparation

  Starter: removed

Procedure
1. -
  Check damaged or worn drive gear of the starter.

Normal Conditions
1. -
  Not damaged or worn.

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the starter.

Starter Functional Inspection

NOTE:

When checking the current draw, you can use the GR8 battery diagnostic station with AST module (12 volt). For setup, customization, and other available features, refer to the GR8 user's manual.

Preconditions

NOTE:

This procedure can be done before any other inspections are completed because this test procedure includes all of the following inspection items. However, if this test fails, it will be necessary to continue with each inspection item individually to determine which item failed.

The starter is operated when trying to start the engine.
Drive gear of the starter is normal.
Ring gear of the torque converter is normal.
12 volt battery is normal

Test Procedure

Preparation
1. -
  The HDS [ALL INJECTORS STOP] is selected
2. -
  Shift to P position/mode

Procedure
- Connect an ammeter (0 - 400 A) as shown.
- Press the brake pedal.
- Turn the vehicle to the START mode, and check the current during cranking.

Normal Conditions
1. -
  The cranking current range is between 80 A and 380 A .

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the starter.
NOTE:
1. -
  If the result shows there is a problem with the starter, do the starter performance test .
2. -
  If the current value is too large even though the starter hardly operates, the engine rotational load may be too large (engine seizure, etc.).

+B_BATTERY Circuit Inspection

  Perform the inspection according to the following table.

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem in the circuit.

ST_MG_SW, GND [ST_MG_SW] Circuit Inspection

  Starter S terminal connector (1P): disconnected

  Perform the inspection according to the following table.


		(Disconnected) Starter S terminal connector (1P) female terminals

ST_MG_SW shorted to ground inspection	OFF		There is more than 1 MOhm (inspection circuit includes a diode)

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem in the circuit.

+B_STOP Circuit Inspection

PCM Inspection (Starter Switch Internal Circuit)

External circuit is normal.

Test Procedure

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the PCM.

PCM Inspection (Starter Cut Relay Internal Circuit)

NOTE:

Since there is no direct method to test the component itself, troubleshooting is performed on the related components.

Preconditions

NOTE:

12 volt battery is normal.
Body control module is normal.
Relay circuit board is normal.
External circuit is normal.

Test Procedure

Preparation
1. -
  Starter S terminal connector (1P): disconnected
2. -
  The HDS [ALL INJECTORS STOP] is selected

Procedure
1. -
  Jump the starter S terminal connector (1P) terminal No. 1 and the 12 volt battery positive terminal with a jumper wire.

(Disconnected) Starter S terminal connector (1P) male terminals

Normal Conditions
1. -
  The engine cranks.

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with other related components.
If it is normal, there is a problem with the PCM.

Body Control Module Inspection

Preconditions

NOTE:

Brake pedal position switch is normal.
External circuit is normal.
PCM (starter switch internal circuit) is normal.

Test Procedure

Preparation
1. -
  The HDS [ALL INJECTORS STOP] is selected

Procedure
- Press the brake pedal.
- Turn the vehicle to the START mode, and confirm the HDS [Starter Switch].

Normal Conditions
1. -
  The HDS [Starter Switch] changed.

Results

If it is abnormal, there is a problem with the body control module.

Engine Assembly Inspection

Test Procedure

If the other inspection item(s) indicated a normal condition, then it is determined that the remaining engine assembly is the cause.

Results

There is a problem with the engine assembly.
NOTE:
It is a mechanical problem in the engine (excessive drag).
