Rear Entertainment System Description: Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2025 Honda Odyssey, 2024 Honda Odyssey, 2023 Honda Odyssey, 2022 Honda Odyssey, and 2021 Honda Odyssey. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Basic Configuration

The rear entertainment system has a retractable display mounted on the inside of the roof for the second and third row passengers. This system can be controlled by the center display unit, RES screen (using the wireless remote control), and the approved customer's smartphone (using HONDA Cabin Control ®).

RES Control Unit

The RES control unit is a main unit for the rear entertainment. This unit is connected to other units in which belong to audio and visual system using the MOST bus. Also, this unit receives audio/video source directly from the HDMI port. The audio/video source that is received by the RES control unit outputs to the RES screen using the LVDS line, then outputs the audio source to the wireless headphone(s) using the infrared connection. The audio source can output to wired headphone(s) using the rear auxiliary jack assembly(s). The RES control unit communicates with the cabin watch camera using FPD connection (see Cabin Watch).

Self-Diagnostic Function

The infotainment control unit can check the RES control unit status by performing the System Diagnostic Mode.

OTA (Over the Air) Update

The infotainment control unit is able to download the update software for the RES control unit using the Wi-Fi network or the Bluetooth tethering via the customer's cell phone. For the vehicle with a telematics, the telematics control unit is able to download the update software using the own cellular network. Refer to the Audio and Visual System description.

RES Screen

The RES screen has a 10.1 inch WSVGA color TFT LCD unit and the infrared interface for the wireless remote control, wireless headphone(s), and illumination of the cabin watch camera. The display backlight turns on when the DISP CONT RES signal changes from OFF to ON. This status depends on the opening angle of the display panel. The RES screen also can be turned OFF by the center display unit or the wireless remote control (when the display panel is opening).

Display Panel Angle(About) Display Backlight
0° (Full closed) - 15° OFF
15° - 125° ON
125° - 140° (Full opened) OFF

When the display panel turns ON, this unit communicates with the RES control unit using the LVDS line, and transmits digital audio/video signal and control signal.

Fail-Safe Function

The RES screen performs a fail-safe control when the system detects an abnormal high temperature in the unit:

BD Player Unit

The BD player unit is a optical media player that can play Blu-Ray disc, DVD (except DVD-RAM), and CD-DA. Compressed audio files (MP3, WMA, and AAC) in the CD-R/CD-RW are available. The audio/video data is saved temporary on the shock proof memory for reducing the disc skip. This unit has an illumination dimming function that is controlled by the ILLUMI+ signal and the ILLUMI-(LED) signal. The BD player unit is connected to other units in which belong to audio and visual system using the MOST bus.

Fail-Safe Function

The BD player unit performs a fail-safe control when the system detects an abnormal state in the unit:

Built-in cooling fan on/off control: When the BD player unit temperature is too high, the BD player unit turns the cooling fan on until the temperature cools down.

Self-Diagnostic Function

The infotainment control unit can check the BD player unit status by performing the System Diagnostic Mode.

Error Messages

If any problem is occurred in the BD player unit, the center display unit indicates error message.

Wireless Remote Control

The wireless remote control enables the passengers to operate the rear entertainment system from the rear seats.

The wireless remote control sends control signal to the RES screen using infrared. With rear entertainment on and rear control enabled, rear passengers can control the functions (except volume) with the wireless remote control.

Wireless Headphone

The wireless headphones allow the rear passengers to listen to the audio from the rear entertainment system without using the speakers.

The wireless headphones receive the audio signals from the RES screen using infrared (HF wave). Then the wireless headphone demodulates HF wave to FM wave. Each ear piece uses different frequencies when receiving audio signals (Left: 2.3 MHz, Right: 2.8 MHz).

The wireless headphones are also used for the CabinTalk function (see the Audio and Visual System description).

RES Auxiliary Jack Assembly

The left/right auxiliary jack assembly consists of the RCA type headphone jack and the volume control dial. The RES auxiliary jack assembly is connected directly to the RES control unit, and outputs the audio signal to the connected customer's wired headphone(s). These parts have an illumination dimming function that is controlled by the ILLUMI signal and the ILLUMI-(LED) signal.

HDMI Port

The HDMI port is connected directly to the RES control unit. HDMI has a copyright protection and transmits the digital video and audio data in uncompressed forms. When the HDMI device is connected, the video source is sent to the RES screen via the LVDS line, and the audio source is sent to the stereo amplifier *1 or the tuner-amplifier unit *2 via the MOST bus.

*1: With 11 speakers

*2: With 7 speakers

Cabin Watch

The cabin watch is aimed to the second and third row passenger's seat for seeing the rear passenger(s) by the center display unit.

The cabin watch camera communicates with the RES control unit using the FPD connection. The CWC FPD line transmits the power, video, and the control signal between each units. The video source is sent to the infotainment control unit via the MOST bus.

The RES screen supports the infrared lights (IR LEDs) function for the cabin watch camera. When the camera image area is too dark, the RES control unit sends the IR LED ON signal to the RES screen. Then illuminates the IR LEDs located in the infrared transmitters. The wave length of the IR LED is 850 nm. The RES screen turns on the IR LEDs when closing the display panel.

When wireless headphone is active, IR LEDs cannot be turned off without shutting off the wireless headphone as well.

Error Messages

If any problem is occurred in the cabin watch, the center display unit indicates error message.
