Shift Cable Replacement

- Remove these items:
- Left center console panel (see DASHBOARD/STEERING HANGER BEAM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Right center console panel (see DASHBOARD/STEERING HANGER BEAM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Center console Box (see DASHBOARD/STEERING HANGER BEAM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Shift the shift lever to R.
- Remove the nut (A) securing the shift cable end, and remove the shift cable end.
- Unlock the retainer (A).
- Rotate the socket holder retainer (A) counterclockwise (B) until it stops, and push the retainer lock (C) into the socket holder retainer to lock the retainer.
- Move the socket holder (A), then slide it to remove the shift cable (B) from the shift cable bracket (C).
- Do the battery removal procedure (see BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION ).
- Remove the under-hood subfuse box from its bracket, and remove the bracket from the battery base.
- Remove the intake air duct and the air cleaner housing.
- Remove the battery base and the battery base bracket.
- Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the control lever (D).
- Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
- Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is supported securely.
- Remove the heat shield under the shift cable grommet.
- Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (A).
- Remove the shift cable grommet, and pull out the shift cable (C).
- Insert the new shift cable through the grommet hole (D), and install the grommet in its hole. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
- Secure the shift cable bracket with the nut.
- Install the heat shield.
- Make sure that the transmission is in R at the transmission control lever.
- Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B).
- Secure the shift cable bracket (C) with the nuts.
- Attach the shift cable end to the control lever (D), then insert the control pin (E) into the control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (F).
- Install the shift cable on the shifter end, and adjust the shift cable.
- Install the battery base bracket and battery base.
- Install the air cleaner housing and the intake air duct.
- Install the under-hood subfuse box on the battery base, and install the subfuse box on its bracket.
- Do the battery installation procedure (see BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION ).
