DTC P150F: Radiator Fan Control (RFC) Communication Line Malfunction (2017)
General Description
The radiator fan control (RFC) unit cools the radiator and the condenser. A brushless motor is employed to deal with increase in the operation frequency of the fan motor by electric powertrain system. The powertrain control module (PCM) communicates with the RFC unit using the pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal. The PCM sends operation command to the RFC unit via FAN CONTROL line using the PWM signal according to the condition of the vehicle. When malfunction in the system is detected by self-diagnosis, the RFC unit outputs the prescribed PWM signal frequency for the RFC DIAG line to the PCM as diagnostic information.
Case 1
- The RFC unit determines a communication error when the voltage in the FAN CONTROL line is Low or High for a given period of time and sends communication error information to the PCM via the RFC DIAG line. The PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC when the communication error information is received from the RFC unit for a given period of time or more.
Case 2
- The PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC when the voltage in the RFC DIAG line is low or high continuously for the prescribed time or more.

[ ]: HDS Parameter
Malfunction Threshold
One of these conditions is met:
Case 1
- When the voltage in the FAN CONTROL line is low or high continuously for 210 seconds and then for further 60 seconds or more.
Case 2
- When the voltage in the RFC DIAG line is low or high continuously for 60 seconds or more.
Possible Cause
NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- RFC unit FAN CONTROL line open
- RFC unit RFC DIAG line open
- RFC unit FAN CONTROL line short
- RFC unit RFC DIAG line short
- RFC unit failure
- PCM failure
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, a Confirmed DTC and the freeze data are stored. The MIL does not come on.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool Clear command or by disconnecting the 12 volt battery.
