Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required 

NOTE:
  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • To avoid damaging the wires and the terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector housings.
  1. Make sure you have anti-theft code for the audio system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly (see AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then disconnect the positive cable.
  4. Remove the battery hold-down bracket, and remove the battery and the battery tray.
  5. Remove the harness clamps from the battery base, then remove the battery base.
  6. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported. Remove the front wheels.
  7. Remove the splash shield.
  8. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).

  9. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
  10. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector, the solenoid valve B connector, and the solenoid valve C connector.

  11. Remove the harness clamp (D).
  12. Remove the mounting bolts securing the harness cover (E), and remove the clamp (F).
  13. Disconnect the transmission range switch harness connector (A), the 2nd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (B), the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (C), and the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (D).

  14. Remove the A/F sensor connector (E) from the clamp bracket.
  15. Remove the harness clamp (F).
  16. Disconnect the shift solenoid harness connector (A) and the 3rd clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (B).

  17. Remove the harness clamps (C).
  18. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (D). Turn the end of the ATF cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hoses and the lines.
  19. Remove the air cleaner bracket.

  20. Install the universal eyelet with a 10 mm (0.4 in.) spacer.

  21. Install the Fit engine hanger adapter to the engine support hanger, then carefully install the fit engine hanger adapter and the engine support hanger.

  22. Attach the hook (A) of the engine support hanger to the universal eyelet, then turn the wing nut (B) to support the engine.
  23. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolts.

  24. Remove the spindle nut, and tap the driveshaft (A) inward with a plastic hammer to allow the special tool to fit on the lower arm ball joint.

  25. Insert a 5 mm Allen wrench (B) in the end of the ball joint pin (C), and remove the nuts (D), then separate the front stabilizer link from the stabilizer.
  26. Remove the cotter pins (E) and the ball joint nuts (F) from the tie-rod ends (G), then separate the steering tie-rod ends from the knuckles (H) (see BALL JOINT REMOVAL ).
  27. Remove the spring clips (I) and the castle nuts (J), then separate the lower arms (K) from the knuckles (see BALL JOINT REMOVAL ).
  28. Remove the shift cable cover (A), then remove the shift cable holder (B).

  29. Pry up the lock tab of the lock washer (C), and remove the lock bolt (D) and the lock washer, then separate the shift cable (E) from the selector control shaft (F). Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  30. Remove the driveshafts from the differential and the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over driveshaft ends.

  31. Remove the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over intermediate shaft ends.

  32. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the drive plate bolts (B) (8) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.

  33. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts, the bracket, and the stiffener.

  34. Remove the gearbox mounting bolts and the bracket.

  35. Remove the rear mount bracket bolts.

  36. Hang the steering gearbox from the body with nylon straps on both sides.
  37. Support the front subframe with a jack.

  38. Remove the four front subframe mounting bolts, then lower the front subframe.

  39. Remove the headlight harness cover.
  40. Remove the transmission ground cable terminal (A).

  41. Disconnect the breather tube (B) from the breather joint, and remove the transmission mount bracket bolt and nuts, and the mount bolt (C), then remove the transmission mount bracket (D).
  42. Place a jack under the transmission.
  43. Remove the rear and lower transmission housing mounting bolts.

  44. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
  45. Remove the rear mount/bracket from the transmission.

  46. Remove the rear mount base bracket.

  47. Remove the torque converter and the dowel pins.

  48. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged.
