Shift Cable Replacement

- Remove the center console (see CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION )
- Move the shift lever to R.
- Remove the nut securing the shift cable end.
- Unlock the retainer lock (A).
- Rotate the socket holder retainer (A) counterclockwise (B) until it stops, and push the retainer lock (C) into the socket holder retainer to lock the retainer.
- Slide the socket holder (A) away from the bracket as shown to remove the shift cable (B) from the socket holder bracket (C). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (D).
- Do the battery removal procedure (see BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the air cleaner housing (see AIR CLEANER ELEMENT INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT ).
- Remove the battery base (see step 12 on ).
- Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable and (C) from the selector control lever (D).
- Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
- Raise the vehicle on a lift, or apply parking brake, block both rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle. Make sure it is securely supported.
- 4WD: Remove the bolts (A) securing the propeller shaft protector (B), then remove the propeller shaft protector.
- Remove the bolts (C) securing the heat shield (D), then remove the heat shield.
- Remove the bolt securing the shift cable bracket (A).
- Remove the shift cable grommet (B), and pull out the shift cable (C).
- Insert a new shift cable through the grommet hole (D), and install the grommet in its hole. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
- Secure the shift cable bracket with the bolt.
- Install the heat shield.
- 4WD: Install the propeller shaft protector.
- Install the shift cable bracket (A) with the nuts.
- Attach the shift cable (B) end to the selector control lever (C), then insert the control pin (D) into the selector control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (E).
- Install the battery base (see step 81 on ).
- Install the air cleaner housing (see AIR CLEANER ELEMENT INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT ).
- Do the battery installation procedure (see BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
- Adjust the shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT ).
