Engine Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2015 Honda Crosstour, 2014 Honda Crosstour, 2013 Honda Crosstour, 2012 Honda Crosstour, and 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special Tools Required 

* Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.

NOTE:
  • Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
  • To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
  • Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
  1. Pry the passenger's side hood support strut clip, and release the passenger's side hood support strut from the pivot bolt (see HOOD SUPPORT STRUT REPLACEMENT ).
  2. Remove the driver's side hood support strut bracket (A), then use it as shown to prop the hood in the wide-open position.
    NOTE:
    • Turn the hood support strut bracket inside out.
    • Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position, as it will damage the support strut and the rod.

  3. Remove the strut brace (see FRAME BRACE REPLACEMENT ).
  4. Drain the power steering fluid (see FLUID REPLACEMENT ).
  5. Relieve the fuel pressure (see FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING ).
  6. Remove the engine cover (see step 1 in IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  7. Do the battery removal procedure (see BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
  8. Remove the splash separator (see step 4 in INTAKE AIR RESONATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  9. Remove the front grille cover (see FRONT GRILLE COVER REPLACEMENT ).
  10. Remove the air cleaner (see AIR CLEANER ELEMENT INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT ).
  11. Remove the harness clamp (A) and the bolt (B) and loosen the bolts (C), then remove the battery base (D).

  12. Disconnect the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.

  13. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) with the bracket (A), then disconnect the PCM connectors (B).

  14. Remove the driver's side front fender trim (see FRONT FENDER TRIM REPLACEMENT ).
  15. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector (A), then remove the harness clamps (B) and the bracket (C).

  16. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).

  17. Remove the quick connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B):
  18. Remove the drive belt (see '10 model DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT ). For '11-'12 Models (see DRIVE BELT INSPECTION ).
  19. Disconnect the power steering (P/S) pump outlet line (A) and the P/S pump inlet line (B) from the P/S pump and remove the P/S hose bracket (C), then plug the lines and the P/S pump.

  20. Remove the steering joint cover (A).

  21. Make a reference mark (B) across the steering joint (C), and loosen the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). Loosen the steering joint bolts (E), (F), then install the steering wheel holder tool (see STEERING GEARBOX REMOVAL ).
  22. Remove the steering joint bolt, then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.
  23. Remove the shift cable (see SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT ). Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  24. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  25. Remove the front wheels.
  26. Remove the engine undercover.

  27. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant (see COOLANT CHECK ).
  28. Drain the engine oil (see ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK ).
  29. Drain the transmission fluid (see ATF REPLACEMENT ).
  30. Remove exhaust pipe A.

  31. Remove the damper fork (see step 3 in LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  32. Separate the tie-rod end ball joints from the knuckles (see step 9 in KNUCKLE/HUB/WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT ).
  33. Separate the knuckles from the suspension lower arms (see BALL JOINT REMOVAL ).
  34. Remove the driveshafts (see DRIVESHAFT INSPECTION ). Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
  35. 4WD model: Remove the propeller shaft from the transfer shaft flange (see PROPELLER SHAFT RUNOUT ).
  36. 4WD model: Remove the transfer assembly (see TRANSFER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL ).
  37. Disconnect the P/S fluid hose (A). Turn end of the hose up to prevent power steering fluid from flowing out, then plug the line and the hose.

  38. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector (A).

  39. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  40. Remove the radiator (see RADIATOR REPLACEMENT ).
  41. Disconnect the heater hoses (A).

  42. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.
    NOTE: Hang the A/C compressor with a wire tie.

  43. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses from the transmission, then plug the ATF cooler hoses and the lines (see ATF COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT ).
  44. Remove the harness holder and the connectors from the front cylinder head (see step 3 in CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL ).
  45. Remove the connector bracket (A) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (B) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.

  46. Remove the harness bracket (A) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (B) to attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm.

  47. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with several spacers (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Remove the rear arm from the engine hanger balance bar, then install the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033). Attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (D) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (E).

  48. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (F) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.
    NOTE:
    • Be careful when working around the windshield.
    • Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
    • AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.
  49. Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the front engine mount bolt (B) and disconnect the engine mount actuator connector (C), and remove the connector (D) from the front subframe.

  50. Remove the rear engine mount stop (A), then remove the rear engine mount bolt (B) and disconnect the engine mount actuator connector (C).

  51. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  52. Remove the harness clamps (A).

  53. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).

  54. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.
  55. Loosen the subframe middle mount bolts on both sides.

  56. Remove the nuts securing the lower transmission mount nuts.

  57. Remove the four 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (A) securing the stiffeners (B), the four subframe mounting bolts (C), and the stiffeners, then lower the front subframe (D).

  58. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  59. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the engine hanger (B) and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar.

  60. Remove the ground cable (A).

  61. Remove the mounting bolts from the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.

  62. Remove the harness bracket (A), then remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts and nut.
    NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.

  63. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.
  64. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.
  65. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.
  66. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
