Damper/Spring Replacement: Disassembly/Inspection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Acura MDX, 2005 Acura MDX, 2004 Acura MDX, and 2003 Acura MDX. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Compress the damper spring, then remove the self-locking nut (A) while holding the damper rod with a hex wrench (B). Do not compress the spring more than necessary to remove the nut.
- Release the pressure from the strut spring compressor, then disassemble the damper as shown in the Exploded View.
- Reassemble all parts, except for the spring.
- Compress the damper assembly by hand, and check for smooth operation through a full stroke, both compression and extension. The damper should extend in a smooth, continuous motion when the compression is released. If it does not (no compression or no extension), the gas is leaking, and the damper should be replaced.
- Check for oil leaks, abnormal noises, or binding during these tests.
