SERVICE INFORMATION

The Insight is an all-new, gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle for 2000. Many of the PDI procedures are the same as for any Honda vehicle, but some new features require special attention. This service bulletin outlines the PDI procedures for these new features as well as some new model information.

Be sure to view the Honda PROformance videos, Insight New Model Introduction, Test #186, Insight PDI, Test #187, and IMA System Service Procedures, Test #188, before performing the PDI.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

None; these procedures are considered part of PDI.

FUSES

The 30 A Backup/ACC fuse and the 7.5 A IMA ECU fuse are removed from the under-hood fuse/relay box during shipping. They are stored in the coin pocket. Install both of these fuses in the under-hood fuse/relay box. See Fig 1 .

INITIALIZING THE IMA BATTERY LEVEL GAUGE

The IMA battery is approximately 50 percent charged. Because the IMA ECU fuse was removed for shipping, the battery level gauge indicates a discharged battery.

To initialize the battery level gauge, you must remove the EPS fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box, start the engine, and hold the engine at 3,500 RPM until the battery level gauge shows at least half full. When the battery level gauge is at half full, turn off the engine and reinstall the EPS fuse.

FRONT STRAKES

Front strakes and related hardware are provided in the PDI plastic bag. To install the front strakes, do this:

NOTE: To ensure proper strake adhesion, make sure the front bumper and strakes are above 60° F.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, making sure that you use the proper lift points.
  2. Remove the inner fender mounting screws.
  3. Clean the front bumper with isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Install two spring nuts (A) on the bumper. See Fig 2 .
Fig 2: Installing Spring Nuts and Clip Nut
    G00192683
  5. Install three spring nuts (B) on the bumper.
  6. Install two spring nuts (C) on the inner fender.
  7. Install the clip nut (D) on the strake.
  8. Peel back a short section of release tape at each end of the strake.
  9. Loosely install the four front screws.
  10. Make sure there is no gap between the strake and the bumper.
  11. When the strake is properly positioned, remove the release tape and tighten the four front screws.
  12. Install the remaining screws and bolts.
  13. Lower the vehicle.

AUTO IDLE STOP

To maximize fuel economy, the Insight has an Auto Idle Stop function. Under certain conditions, the engine shuts off when you come to a stop. To test the Auto Idle Stop function, do this:

  1. Bring the engine to operating temperature (cooling fans cycle two times).
  2. Turn off the climate control and the rear defogger.
  3. Test-drive the vehicle, making sure to shift into at least second gear.
  4. Press in the clutch. Use the brakes to come to a complete stop while leaving the transmission in second gear.
  5. The AUTO STOP indicator should come on, and the engine should stop. See Fig 3 .

  6. With the clutch pedal still pressed, shift the transmission into first gear. The engine should restart.

FUEL MILEAGE DISPLAY

To reset the lifetime fuel mileage display, do this:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
  2. Use the TRIP button to display the odometer.
  3. Press and hold the TRIP button until the lifetime fuel mileage display begins to blink (approximately five seconds) .
  4. Release the TRIP button, then press and hold it again until the lifetime fuel mileage display clears to three dashes. See Fig 4 .

AUDIO SYSTEM

The 2000 Insight comes with two front speakers. Adjust the fader control to the maximum front setting. To do this, push the BASS/FADER control knob to get it to pop out, then pull it out slightly farther. Turn the knob clockwise, then push the BASS/FADER knob back in. Rear speakers are optional.

UNDERCARRIAGE INSPECTION

The Insight has many body panels made of plastic and aluminum that are easily damaged. Make sure you raise the vehicle at the proper lift points when inspecting the undercarriage or installing the front strakes. See Fig 5 .

DATA LINK CONNECTOR

The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located behind the center console on the right side. See Fig 6 .

IMMOBILIZER ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM

The Insight is equipped with an Immobilizer anti-theft system similar to the system on the Accord and the Odyssey.

A/C MICRON FILTER

A micron filter is used to filter air entering the vehicle. This filter should be replaced every 12 months or 15,000 miles. Refer to section 21 of the 2000 Insight Service Manual for the replacement procedure.

RECOMMENDED OILS

Engine Oil: API service SJ, SAE viscosity 0W-20.

Transmission Oil: Genuine Honda MTF.

WASHING THE INSIGHT

To avoid damaging the Insight when going through an automatic car wash, you must remove the antenna. If the automatic car wash has tire cleaning brushes, you must remove the rear fender skirts. See Fig 7 .

SPARK PLUGS

The 2000 Insight uses specially threaded spark plugs to ensure proper electrode alignment. Each spark plug has a letter stamped on it. Corresponding letters are stamped on the cylinder head. Be sure to install the proper spark plug in each cylinder. See Fig 8 .

SPECIAL BOLTS

The 2000 Insight has many components and parts that are made of aluminum. Specially coated hardware (nuts and bolts) are used for corrosion prevention. If hardware replacement is necessary, replace it only with the same specially coated hardware. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the specified torque listed in the service manual. See Fig 9 .
