Cylinder Block

  1. Check cylinder block deck surface for warpage. Measure top of cylinder block along 4 edges and 2 ways across center (corner to corner). Measure cylinder wear and taper in 2 directions, 90 degrees apart and at 3 levels (middle and 0.2" (5 mm) from top and bottom of cylinder). Letters or bars have been stamped on end of cylinder block above water pump, as a code indicating standard bore size for each cylinder.
  2. If either wear or taper exceeds specification, rebore cylinder for oversized pistons. If any cylinder block measurement exceeds service limit or oversize bore service limit, replace cylinder block. See CYLINDER BLOCK  under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Scored or scratched cylinder bores must be honed. If cylinder block is okay, hone cylinders to obtain a 60-degree crosshatch pattern. After honing, wash cylinder bores with hot soapy water to remove all metal particles, dry cylinder bores and apply engine oil immediately to prevent rusting.
