DTC 53: Modulator Unit Pump Motor Stuck On

  1. Ensure with ignition switch in ON position, ABS indicator light does not turn off.
  2. Check if ABS pump motor operates with ignition off. If ABS pump motor operates with ignition off, replace ABS pump motor relay. ABS pump motor relay is located in underhood fuse/relay box located at right rear of engine compartment. If pump motor does not run with ignition off, go to next step.
  3. Check ABS UNIT fuse (7.5-amp) in underhood fuse/relay box. If fuse is not blown, remove fuse and go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse, and retest system.
  4. Turn ignition on. While backprobing connector, measure voltage between underhood fuse/relay box 11-pin connector terminal No. 9 (Green/Orange wire) and ground. If voltage is about 11 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 11 volts, repair open in Green/Orange wire between ABS control unit 22-pin connector and underhood fuse/relay box 11-pin connector. See Figure and Figure .
  5. Reinstall ABS UNIT fuse (7.5-amp). Disconnect 2-pin connector from ABS pump motor. Ensure ignition is still on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (White/Blue wire) of pump motor connector. If about 11 volts exists, go to next step. If 11 volts does not exist, repair open in White/Blue wire between pump motor and ABS pump motor relay.
  6. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ABS pump motor connector terminals. If about 11 volts exists, go to next step. If about 11 volts does not exist, repair open in Black wire between ABS pump motor and one-wire ground terminal G302. One-wire ground terminal G302 is located at left front of engine compartment, behind windshield washer fluid fill, closest to radiator. If wire is okay, repair ground terminal G302.
  7. Remove ABS pump motor relay. Disconnect ABS control unit 12-pin connector. See Figure . Check for continuity between ABS controlunit 12-pin connector terminal No. 12 and ground. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Yellow/Red wire between ABS control unit 12-pin connector and ABS pump motor relay. If continuity does not exist, replace ABS control unit and retest.
