DTC 52: Modulator Unit Pump Motor Stuck Off

  1. Ensure when vehicle starts, ABS indicator light illuminates. Check ABS MOTOR fuse (30-amp) in underhood ABS fuse/relay box at right rear corner of engine compartment. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 3).
  2. Remove ABS pump motor relay from underhood fuse/relay box. Connect terminals "A" and "B" of ABS pump motor relay connector together momentarily with a fused jumper wire. See Figure . Check ABS MOTOR fuse (30-amp) in underhood ABS fuse/relay box. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in White/Blue wire between ABS pump motor and ABS pump motor relay. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  3. Check ABS UNIT fuse (7.5-amp) in underhood fuse/relay box. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 5).
  4. With ABS pump motor relay removed, connect terminals "A" and "B" of ABS pump motor relay connector together momentarily with a fused jumper wire. Check ABS UNIT fuse (7.5-amp) in underhood ABS fuse/relay box. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in Green/Orange wire between ABS control unit 22-pin connector and ABS UNIT (7.5-amp) fuse. See Figure and Figure . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  5. Check ABS pump motor relay, located in underhood fuse/relay box, for proper operation. See RELAY TEST under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If ABS pump motor relay is okay, go to next step. If ABS pump motor relay is not okay, replace relay.
  6. With ABS pump motor relay removed, connect terminals "A" and "B" of ABS pump motor relay connector together momentarily with a fused jumper wire. See Figure . Check if ABS pump motor operates. If pump motor operates, go to step 10). If pump motor does not operate, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect 2-pin connector from pump motor. Connect terminals "A" and "B" of ABS pump motor relay connector together momentarily with a fused jumper wire. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between ABS pump motor connector terminal No. 1 (White/Blue wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Blue wire between ABS pump motor relay and ABS pump motor.
  8. Ensure fused jumper wire between ABS pump motor relay connector is still connected. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between ABS pump motor connector terminals.
  9. If battery voltage exists, replace ABS modulator unit. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black wire between ABS pump motor and one-wire ground terminal G302. One-wire ground terminal G302 is located at left front of engine compartment, behind windshield washer fluid fill, closest to radiator. If wire is okay, repair ground terminal G302.
  10. Remove fused jumper wire from ABS pump motor relay connector. Disconnect ABS control unit 12-pin connector. See Figure . With ABS pump motor relay removed, connect terminals "A" and "C" of ABS pump motor relay connector together momentarily with a fused jumper wire. See Figure . Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between ABS control unit 12-pin connector terminal No. 12 and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, test drive vehicle. If problem reoccurs, replace ABS control unit.
  11. Repair short to voltage in Yellow/Red wire between ABS control unit 12-pin connector and ABS pump motor relay.
