DTC 54: Main Relay

  1. If ABS indicator light says on with ignition switch in ON position, go to next step.
  2. Check ABS +B fuse (20-amp) in underhood ABS fuse/relay box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. Replace fuse if blown, and retest system.
  3. While backprobing connector, check for battery voltage between ABS control unit 26-pin connector terminal No. 14 (White/Green wire) or No. 15 (White/Green wire) and ground. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in White/Green wires between ABS control unit 26-pin connector and underhood ABS fuse/relay box.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove ABS pump motor relay. Disconnect ABS control unit 22-pin connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ABS control unit 22-pin connector terminal No. 19 (Yellow/Red wire) and ground. See Figure . If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Yellow/Red wire between ABS control unit 22-pin connector and underhood ABS fuse/relay box.
  5. Disconnect ABS control unit 26-pin connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between ABS control unit 26-pin connector terminals No. 1 (Green/White wire) or No. 2 (Black/White wire) and ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Green/White wire between ABS control unit 26-pin connector and underhood ABS fuse/relay box. Also repair short to ground in Green/White wire or Black/White wire between ABS control unit 26-pin connector and ABS modulator unit. If all wires are okay, replace ABS modulator unit.
  6. Start engine. Using DVOM measure voltage between ABS control unit 26-pin connector terminals No. 1 (Green/White wire) or No. 2 (Black/White wire) and ground. If 8 volts does not exist, go to next step. If 8 volts exists, repair short to voltage in Green/White wire between ABS control unit 26-pin connector and underhood ABS fuse/relay box. Also repair short to voltage in Green/White wire or Black/White wire between ABS control unit 26-pin connector and ABS modulator unit. If all wires are okay, replace ABS modulator unit.
  7. Turn ignition off. Connect fused jumper wire or SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) between 2-pin connector terminals. See Figure or Figure . Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ABS control unit 26-pin connector terminals No. 1 (Green/White wire) or No. 2 (Black/White wire) and ground. If voltage does not exists, replace ABS control unit.
