Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Input Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Honda Civic del Sol and 1995 Honda Civic del Sol. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect 3-pin connector from speed sensor, located on right side of engine. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between Black wire and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Black wire. Check for poor ground connection. Repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between Yellow/Blue wire and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for short to ground in Yellow/Blue wire. Check for blown fuse No. 24 (models with air bag) or fuse No. 12 (models without air bag) in dash fuse/relay box. Repair or replace as necessary.
  3. Ensure ignition is on. Check voltage between Yellow/White wire and ground. If reading is about 5 volts, go to next step. If reading is not about 5 volts, check for open or short to ground in Yellow/White wire.
  4. If continuity and voltage are okay, but speedometer and odometer/trip meter do not operate properly, replace speed sensor.
