Air Suction Valve

  1. With engine at normal operating temperature, remove air cleaner cover and air filter. Start engine and listen for a bubbling noise at air suction port at idle speed. Bubbling noise should not be heard. If heard, disconnect the No. 5 vacuum hose from air suction valve and connect a vacuum gauge to hose. See Fig 1. Vacuum should not be present at hose. If vacuum is present, test air suction control solenoid. If not, replace valve and retest.
  2. Block rear wheels and set parking brake. Jack up front of vehicle and support with safety stands. Place transmission in second gear or in the "2" position and accelerate to greater than 12 MPH, then release throttle and check for a bubbling noise from air suction port on air cleaner. Noise should be heard now.
  3. If noise was not heard, disconnect the No. 5 vacuum hose from air suction valve and connect a vacuum gauge. Vacuum should be present. If not, inspect air suction control solenoid valve. If so, replace air suction valve and retest.
