Code 17: Vehicle Speed PULSER (VSS)
- Clear ECU memory. Block rear wheels and set parking brake. Raise front of vehicle and support with stands. Connect ECU test harness between ECU and ECU connector. See Figure . Turn ignition on.
- Slowly rotate left front wheel and measure voltage between terminals B16 (pos.) and A18 (neg.). If voltmeter does not pulse, go to step 4). If voltmeter pulses from 0-5 volts, road test vehicle. Place shift lever in 2nd gear (M/T) or "2" position (A/T). Accelerate to 4000 RPM and decelerate to 1200 RPM (foot off accelerator). Verify if "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on and if Code 17 is present.
- If "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on and Code 17 is present, substitute a known good ECU and recheck. If specified voltage is now present, replace original ECU. If "CHECK ENGINE" light does not come on and Code 17 is not present, problem is intermittent. Check VSS wiring connectors.
- If from step 2), voltage does not pulse, but approximately 5 volts is read, repair open in White/Blue wire between ECU and VSS or replace VSS sensor. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- On automatic transmission models, disconnect automatic transmission control unit (located under carpet on passenger side footwell) connector "A" from control unit side. If approximately 5 volts is now present, replace automatic transmission control unit.
- Disconnect cruise control connector. Check if approximately 5 volts is present. If it is, replace cruise control unit. If not, disconnect ECU connector "B" from wire harness side. If 5 volts is present now, repair short to ground in White/Blue wire between ECU terminal B16 and VSS, or A/T control unit, or cruise control unit. If wires are okay, replace VSS.
- If 5 volts is not present from step 6), substitute a known good ECU and recheck. If 5 volts is now present, replace original ECU.
